Frequently Asked Questions
The honest answer is: it depends! Every dog and situation is different. How long training takes can vary based on things like your dog's individual learning style, the behavior we're working on, the severity, how often skills are practiced, what the environment and management are like, etc. Because there are so many moving parts when dealing with behavior, it's impossible to predict an exact timeline or outcome - but I'm always focused on making progress as efficiently, kindly and sustainably as possible.
PS: if someone is offering you guarantees on behavior change - run!
I believe honesty and transparency are vital to this process, therefore all Services & Rates are listed on the website for you to view up front while making your decision to reach out. (You'll also find my in-person service areas there!)
I exclusively use humane, rewards-based Positive Reinforcement (R+) and Force-Free (FF) training methods. This is aligned with the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior's position that corrections or force are unnecessary and can/do worsen behaviors over time.
That said, I meet people where they are - so if you are currently using aversive tools and/or methods but committed to transitioning to Force-Free training, I am more than happy to guide you and your dog through that process!
I used to believe virtual training couldn't possibly match in-person sessions. I've since learned virtual training can be just as effective - and sometimes even better for behavior such as stranger danger or separation anxiety. VIrtual consultations allow me to gather all of the information I need without pushing your dog past their threshold or changing the home dynamic. Verbal descriptions and guided observations are generally more than enough to for me to begin tailoring training plans, plus it gives us a chance to ensure we're the right fit before moving forward!
The frequency of sessions depends on your/dog's specific needs, but I generally recommend weekly sessions to start - as this allows me to track progress closely, make timely adjustments, and provide the best support while you're building new habits with your dog. Weekly sessions also tend to produce the most noticeable progress! That said, we'll create a customized schedule together that's realistic and sets everyone up for long-term success.
This is a personal preference! I find email is the easiest way to share information and keep a clear record of questions, observations, plans and progress. It helps me stay organized and ensures nothing gets lost.
If the information on the website or via email isn't quite enough, I'm happy to schedule a brief 10-15 min phone call to answer any additional questions!
